Gina Mathisen’s outstanding talent Super Smooth lived up to his big favouritism in Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 3-year-olds at Øvrevoll on Thursday evening. Together with Willa Schou, the son of Quarterback pulled more than 16 lengths clear of his three rivals for a first prize of NOK 91,000.
The Annike Bye Hansen-trained Another Beauty (Appel Au Maitre) drifted a long way out into the track around the home turn, but battled back in the end to take second place ahead of the Niels Petersen-trained Jazz (Juniper Tree) and Cathrine Erichsen’s Svadilfare (Moohaajim).
Super Smooth is by the former winner of the Norsk Derby and the Stockholm Cup International (Gr.3), Quarterback (American Post), and out of the Tertullus daughter Smooth Escape. He was bred, is owned and is trained by Gina Mathisen.
It was the bay gelding’s fourth win from seven starts – and the fourth in a row since he shed his maiden tag over 1600 metres on turf on 12 October last year.
Gina Mathisen had a really big evening at Øvrevoll, as she is also the breeder, owner and trainer of Miss Hurricane (Quarterback), who a little later took the Norsk Forening for Fullblodsavl Løp over 1730 metres on turf.
This time Harry Willian Wessner was in the irons on the 3-year-old filly, who beat a number of older rivals and secured a first prize of NOK 50,000.
It should also be noted from Øvrevoll that amateur trainer Kieran Watson got his first winner with the 2-year-old Al Rihla (Caturra), who under Lorenzo Putzulu shed her maiden tag ahead of Niels Petersen’s debutant Huntington (Hunter’s Light).
Al Rihla came from a second place on debut behind the smart Romanov (Starspangledbanner), who is expected to run in the Goffs Futurity Stakes on Derby day at Klampenborg.
