Tobias Hellgren and Anna Pilroth laid claim to both jumps races as Bro Park’s Stockholm Cup day got under way on Sunday afternoon. New York Strip took H.M. Drottningens Pris over 3800 metres of hurdles by just under three lengths and is now unbeaten in ten starts over jumps.
Svensk Galopp has to go all the way back to Berthram in the late 1990s to find a comparable winning run.
The seven-year-old son of Appel Au Maitre set out with 69 kilos and long shadowed his stablemate Ghost Town (Go Go Gadget). Over the final flights the matter was settled, and Hellgren filled the frame: Ghost Town was second, Yobro (Al Wukair) third for Sigyn Dysell, and Hellgren-trained Lionell (Appel Au Maitre) followed in fourth ahead of Beck (Dawn Approach).
“New York Strip just keeps getting better and better. If he had had slightly more qualified company today, he would have produced an even better performance”, Anna Pilroth told Anna Thelander after the win.
New York Strip was bred by Nina Falck and Gert Larsen’s Stald Jupiter on Funen and is owned by his trainer together with the Danes Simon and Lars Jakobsen. He has a classic win on his record from his time on the flat — the Danish St. Leger in 2022 at Klampenborg, then trained by Lea Olsen — and after the Calvados Memorial in August, which was his 14th career win, he is now up to 15.
Gert Larsen turned 80 last Friday, and here he was handed a slightly belated but handsome birthday present.
“New York Strip has shown high class in his recent preparation work. Even though Ghost Town is a good horse, the pace was far too slow for New York Strip today. There are plenty of nice targets for him in France later this autumn, and it looks as though that is where we will go next”, Tobias Hellgren told Svensk Galopp.
It became a double when the same two took the steeplechase H.M. Konungens Pris over 4200 metres. Hvitas Stjerna’s Ajas (No Risk At All) opened up a lead of several lengths over Monsieur Vic (Lawman) and Mutadaffeq (New Approach), and from there it was effectively a one-horse race. Only three horses took part, and the 12-year-old won by many lengths.
“This horse is absolutely magical. It is a gift from above to be allowed to ride him”, said Anna Pilroth.
Ajas has now won his last two starts on Swedish soil — the Gyllene Hästen at Bro Park on 11 August came before this one — and in June he was third in the Svenskt Grand National at Strömsholm.
The French-bred Ajas has 17 wins from 38 starts, took the Prix Murat (Gr.2) at Auteuil in 2021 and in December 2024 was second in the Prix Léon Olry-Roederer (Gr.2) at the same track behind Hermes Baie.
“It was really just a prep race ahead of Paris in a couple of weeks”, said Ulf Sjöberg, who bred the gelding himself, and who pointed out that between starts Ajas lives out in the big paddocks at Tobias and Anna’s.
