On Sunday Øvrevoll closes the Scandinavian Breeders’ series for the year. The Breeders’ Prize Classic over 1,980 metres and the Breeders’ Prize Sprint over 1,370 metres share 1,121,350 Norwegian kroner between them, and on top of that come 124,588 kroner in breeders’ premiums. The same day brings the Arnfinn Lunds Minneløp (L) and the Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 2-årige, where the unbeaten Ice And Fire will try to make it three from three. Eight races, 69 runners and 1,885,450 kroner in all. The first race is off at 11.50.
The Scandinavian Breeders’ series consists of six big races: the Danish Breeders’ Cup for four-year-olds, the Svenskt Breeders’ Trophy Juvenile, Classic and Mile – and the two Norwegian ones, the Breeders’ Prize and the Breeders’ Prize Sprint, both for three-year-olds.
The Swedish legs were settled at Bro Park on 30 August, where Bruce Almighty won the Classic and Grab The Moment took the Mile. Now it is Øvrevoll’s turn.
Twenty of the day’s 69 horses are Danish-bred, and seven of them were born at Stutteri Hjortebo.
Breeders’ Prize Classic: Derby winner against Derby winner
The day’s biggest contest, the Breeders’ Prize Classic over 1,980 metres at 14.25, has nine runners and 333,255 kroner to the winner – plus 37,028 to the breeder.
Glæsner Racing ApS’s Doc Holliday (Appel Au Maitre) won the Svenskt Derby at Jägersro on 12 July by nine and a half lengths from Missing and has 1,526,278 kroner in the bank after seven starts. He has since finished seventh in the Danish Derby and fourth in the Breeders’ Trophy Classic. Niels Petersen trains, Carlos Lopez rides, and the horse was bred at Stutteri Hjortebo.
Stall GM’s Super Smooth (Quarterback) won the Range Rover Norwegian Derby on 25 August by three-quarters of a length from Phantom Bling and was last seen finishing fourth in the Norwegian St. Leger, seven lengths behind Galactico Bling. Gina Mathisen is owner, breeder and trainer, Willa Synøve M. Schou rides, and a first prize would take the horse past 1.29 million.
Stald Klampenborg’s King To Be (Moohaajim) has been second in both of the races the other two contested: half a length behind Cosmopolitan in the Danish Derby and six lengths behind Bruce Almighty in the Breeders’ Trophy Classic. Bettina Andersen trains, Jacob Johansen rides – and King To Be was bred at Stutteri Hjortebo as well.
Stall Strike’s Strike Ten (Alson) was the best-placed Swedish-bred when third in the Breeders’ Trophy Classic and has, despite only one win from ten starts, earned 1,113,407 kroner for Jan-Erik Neuroth. Nora Hagelund Holm rides.
Stall Lillemax’s Another Beauty (Appel Au Maitre) won the Norsk Mesterskap for 3-åringer on 10 September by three lengths from Stall GM’s Miss Hurricane (Quarterback), and the two meet again. Both have also taken on Sporty in the Drømmemilen for Norwegian-breds, where Miss Hurricane was second and Another Beauty fifth.
The field is completed by Stall Bonne Nuit’s Tellme Y (Gleneagles), Elkær Stutteri’s Jazz (Juniper Tree), who was second in the Danish Oaks at Klampenborg last time, and Stall Perlen’s Blushing Zone (Appel Au Maitre), who won his maiden at Jägersro by six lengths but had to come out of the Breeders’ Trophy Classic with a wound.
Breeders’ Prize Sprint: Sporty back after a month
At 12.45 comes the Breeders’ Prize Sprint over 1,370 metres with seven runners, 227,420 kroner to the winner and 25,268 to the breeder.
Stall NOK’s Sporty (Moohaajim) has won three of his five starts, most recently the Drømmemilen for Norwegian-breds on 23 August by nine lengths from Miss Hurricane.
He was due to run in the Breeders’ Trophy Classic a week later but was scratched with a wound, so this will be his first start since Derby day at Øvrevoll. Sporty was born in Denmark but bred in Norway by Øien Gård; Niels Petersen trains, Carlos Lopez rides.
Väsby Häst AB’s Plattan I Mattan (Alson) is the biggest earner in the field with 472,573 kroner and was fifth in the Breeders’ Trophy Classic for Ylva Brandt. Lorenzo Putzulu rides.
From Denmark comes Viktors Dream (Giant Sandman), who has won five of his eleven starts for Lea Olsen and last time beat Stald Chili’s Vincenzo (Juniper Tree) by five and a half lengths at Klampenborg on 5 September. The two meet again – Elione Chaves rides Viktors Dream, Jacob Johansen rides Vincenzo for Søren Jensen.
Nathalie Mortensen’s My Dole (Appel Au Maitre) and Stall Amabel’s Bella Flamel (Economic Model) are the two fillies in the race; Bella Flamel won on the dirt last time. Buck Racing’s Buck’s Model (Economic Model) completes the field for Cathrine Erichsen.
Arnfinn Lunds Minneløp (L): Aphelios has been waiting for this one
Väsby Häst AB’s Aphelios (Kodiac) skipped Bro Park last Sunday to go for this race – and his name is on the track record at the top of four of Sunday’s races. The seven-year-old gelding won the Polar Cup (L) for the third year running on 25 August in a time of 1.17,0 over 1,370 metres, faster than stablemate Youonlyliveonce‘s 1.17,6 from 9 July.
Aphelios has 18 wins from 42 starts and 4,938,016 kroner. Annike Bye Hansen trains, Elione Chaves rides.
The opposition includes Bling Enterprise’s Icon Bling (Lope de Vega) with 1,682,776 kroner from six wins, and two Danes: Light Valley Stud’s Silver Legend (Dark Angel), who won at Klampenborg on 28 August, and My Fortune (Appel Au Maitre) with nine wins from 21 starts and 2,439,552 kroner. Both are trained by Bettina Andersen, and My Fortune won by nine lengths at Klampenborg last time.
Then come Team Finn Kristiansen’s Captain Chorus (Paco Boy), who was second behind Light Garden at Øvrevoll on 16 September, plus Stall Lilleville’s Nope Never (No Nay Never) and Hjelte Restaurant AB’s Rebel’s Gamble (Dark Angel), who finished first and second in the same race on 2 September. All seven carry 60 kilos over 1,600 metres, and the first prize is 150,000 kroner.
Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 2-årige: Ice And Fire chasing a third
The day’s second race, the Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 2-årige at 12.20, has 100,000 kroner to the winner and six runners.
Stald Chasing Dreams’ Ice And Fire (Oasis Dream) won her debut at Øvrevoll on 13 August by seven and a half lengths over 900 metres and followed up by winning the ITM Amacitalöpning at Bro Park on 30 August, where she pulled two lengths clear of Rayray.
Behind Stald Chasing Dreams stand Maria Stetsyk and Jakob Dalhoff, and the filly was bred by Lokalebasen.dk as the first foal out of the Juniper Tree mare Margrethe, who won the Sceptre Stakes in 2021. Niels Petersen trains, Carlos Lopez rides.
The Norwegian champion meets her: Stall GM’s Orkan Q (Quarterback) won the Norsk Mesterskap for 2-åringer on 10 September by three lengths from Shogun, and Stall Golden Chicks’ Dalero (Appel Au Maitre) was third in the same race.
From Jan-Erik Neuroth’s yard comes Alonzo (Alson) as well, who was second on his debut on 16 September behind Inzain Bling.
Väsby Häst AB’s Not Your Darling (Moohaajim) and Tobias Hellgren’s Taroona Queen (Best Solution) made their debuts in the same race and finished fourth and fifth. Not Your Darling was bred at Stutteri Hjortebo, Taroona Queen by Dean and Mette Olsen.
The rest of the card
The day opens at 11.50 with the Øvrevoll Hesteeierforenings Jubileumsløp over 1,370 metres, and at 13.10 the Klokkeløp III for amateur riders is run with twelve runners.
The Norsk Galopp Cup – Bronsemile at 14.00 has the day’s biggest field with fifteen horses, and the day closes at 14.50 with the Bronsedivisjon over 2,400 metres. The NoARK Ponnigalopp follows at about 15.00.
