Mehmas Air Force fought her way to a fifth triumph of the year

Mehmas Air Force fought her way to her fifth win of the year when she took the Appel Au Maitre Stockholm Fillies & Mares Stakes ahead of Meelaf. Per-Anders Gråberg rode the three-year-old filly for Lennart Reuterskiöld Jr, and 2100 metres was the longest distance she has tried so far.

The Appel Au Maitre Stockholm Fillies & Mares Stakes over 2100 metres had 250.000 Swedish kronor on offer, and Mehmas Air Force (Mehmas) met as a three-year-old with 56,5 kilos and the highest rating in the field, 87.

She was long positioned third on the inside behind the leading Mazikeen (Appel Au Maitre) and Ninasimone (Rio De La Plata). At the beginning of the straight Gråberg steered her into the clear ground nearest the rails, and from there she soon took a small advantage.

From behind Meelaf (Iffraaj) came quickly closer, but Mehmas Air Force battled bravely over the last few metres and held a neck to the line. The time was 2.15,4 for both of them, and from there it was three quarters of a length to Ninasimone, who won the race last year, and a length and a half more to the Søren Jensen-trained Taifuu (Japan).

“She is a tough filly with a good “turn of foot”. Every time Mehmas Air Force was challenged in the straight she found that little bit extra and fought her way to the line. Beforehand I was a little unsure about the long distance, but there were no problems at all”, said Per-Anders Gråberg.

Five wins from seven starts this year

The win was her fifth of the year from seven starts and the sixth of her career from fourteen. Earlier in the season she won the Tattersalls Norsk 1000 Guineas in July and the Lanwades Stud Stakes (L) at Bro Park on 20 September. The first prize of 125.000 Swedish kronor takes her to 894.215 Swedish kronor.

Mehmas Air Force was bred by Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland and runs in the colours of Stall Gransäter — an owner pseudonym with long roots in Swedish racing. Today Vivi Munthe owns only this one horse.

“Mehmas Air Force has had a fantastic season, and Gråberg is the perfect driver for her”, said Vivi Munthe.

Second place went to Annike Bye Hansen’s Meelaf, who won the Adalöpning in Göteborg on 3 October and now has four seconds this year.
