Ides Of March won Norsk Galopp Sprintløp over 1,170 metres at Øvrevoll on Sunday by a neck, and the weights made the performance bigger than the margin suggests: he carried 63 kilos while Corazon De Leon in second got in with 50. That is a difference of 13 kilos.
Got there just in time
Carlos Lopez brought Elkær Stutteri’s four-year-old colt over the line first in 1.11,7 on heavy ground. Behind him it was a neck to Stall MYM’s Corazon De Leon (Slade Power) and another neck to Väsby Häst AB’s Youonlyliveonce (Sidestep), who carried the race’s top weight of 64 kilos – one more than the winner.
Before that Lopez and Ides Of March had several obstacles to overcome – the biggest being that the gap for the final run came only very late. Ides Of March got there just in time on the line.
From there it was just under five lengths to Stall Birgitta’s French Chunky (French Fifteen) and a further four and a quarter to Max Racing’s Hunters Lullaby (Footstepsinthesand), whom Niels Petersen also trains.

The last three runnings
The race gathered its own recent history in one line-up. Corazon De Leon won it in 2025, and Youonlyliveonce won it in both 2023 and 2024 – and on Sunday they were second and third behind a horse imported to Scandinavia ahead of this season.
Ides Of March had 1,422,459 kroner in the bank before he went to post, but only three wins from seventeen starts. The year began with a win in the Stewards Cup at Bro Park on 20 May, his Scandinavian debut, and since then it has been a string of good placings in the big sprints: third in the German Listed race Hamburger Flieger-Preis on 4 July, third in the Zawawi Sprint Cup (L) at Klampenborg on 1 August, second behind Aphelios in the Polar Cup (L) at Øvrevoll on 25 August and second behind Lamborghini BF in the Bro Park Sprint Championship (L) on 20 September.
On Sunday it became his fourth win in the eighteenth start of his career. The Wootton Bassett colt was bred by Phoenix Thoroughbreds Limited and runs for Elkær Stutteri, who have found here a worthy successor to their former champion sprinter Could Be King (Bated Breath).
Two wins for Lopez
The win was Carlos Lopez’ first of two on the day. One race later he won the Norwegian Oaks on Lady Irene, and he ended the day with two wins and two seconds from four rides. Niels Petersen had seven runners and won both the Norwegian Oaks and the Sprintløp.

Every prize-money placing in each of the eight races counts — not just the winners. The turf was heavy, the dirt track fast. Three horses were withdrawn (Silwan and Bahia Mar because of the going, Angelo barred from the start), so 51 of 54 declared came to post. The Norwegian Oaks and the closing two-year-old race had only four finishers, so NOK 1,146,300 of the 1,168,800 pool was paid out.
