Jan-Erik Neuroth and Oliver Wilson won the first two big races at Øvrevoll on Sunday. First Appelon took The Heatherwold Cup, and half an hour later Charlie Nosto won Fearnleyløpet – a race Cathrine Erichsen had won six years in a row.
Four of the six
The Heatherwold Cup over 1,600 metres drew six two-year-olds, and Jan-Erik Neuroth had four of them. Stall Perlen’s Appelon (Appel Au Maitre) came home first by 4¼ lengths in 1.45,1 on heavy ground, and the trainer took fourth and fifth as well with Carte Blanche and Safari Moon. His fourth, Silwan, was withdrawn in the morning because of the ground.

It was Appelon‘s first win at the third attempt. He was fourth in the Norsk Kriterium on 23 August and third on his debut in July, both times with Stall Perlen’s first jockey Oliver Wilson. Behind him came Stall GT4’s Jacanito (Torquator Tasso) and Stall GM’s Orkan Q (Quarterback), the only previous winner in the field and therefore carrying 60 kilos against the others’ 58.
The race has been run since 1987 and has 31 winners. Last year’s running went to Lady Irene, who completed the Oaks treble in Sunday’s feature, and in 2024 Jan-Erik Neuroth won it with Katsumoto.
The run came to an end
Fearnleyløpet over 1,800 metres is for Norwegian-bred horses, and here Neuroth and Wilson broke a run. Cathrine Erichsen had won the race every year since 2020 – Hampus G in 2020, Purple Ace three years in a row from 2021, Leo Boy in 2024 and Big Chance in 2025. On Sunday she ran Kill That Cat and Zofi, who finished fourth and sixth.
The winner instead was Harry Nilsen’s Charlie Nosto (Mutajally), who came home two and a half lengths clear of Stall Lillemax’ Another Beauty (Appel Au Maitre).

The Breeders’ Prize Classic winner had Per-Anders Gråberg in the saddle and had to settle for second, while the Norwegian Derby winner Super Smooth (Quarterback) finished fifth under the top weight of 62 kilos.
Charlie Nosto had three wins from thirteen starts and had been third in three of his last four. On Sunday he had Oliver Wilson on his back; in the four previous starts it was Nora Hagelund Holm.
Revenge for Captain Chorus
Major Chr F Michelets Minneløp over 2,830 metres was the longest race of the day, and Team Finn Kristiansen’s Captain Chorus (Paco Boy) won it under the top weight of 65 kilos. The eight-year-old gelding finished 2¼ lengths clear of GU Stables’ Carrara (Outstrip), with Stall Lilleville’s Light Garden (Almanzor) third.

It was revenge for 16 September, when Light Garden won the Norsk Galopp Cup – Sølvstayer three lengths ahead of Captain Chorus himself. The win was the eighth in 47 starts for the Erichsen-trained gelding, who has now passed 1.3 million kroner. Last year’s Norwegian Oaks winner Mauna Queen was fifth.
The rest of the day
The two races on the dirt track produced two of the closest finishes of the day. In Bronsedivisjon over 1,600 metres Nathalie Mortensen’s Coachella (Earthlight) won by three-quarters of a length, and the nine horses who finished were covered by eight lengths in all.
Høstbonus Grunnsprint over 1,100 metres produced the biggest surprise of the day: Hanne Rådstoga won with Stogas Athena (Deceptor) at odds of 16.98 – a mare she owns, bred and trains herself. It was a neck back to Emmeline and another neck to Queen Of Hearts.
The day closed with Øvrevoll Hesteeierforening Vandrepokal for Norwegian-bred two-year-olds, where Stall Birgitta’s Sweet Abigail (Mutajally) won by 1¾ lengths on her second start. Cathrine Erichsen trains, Per-Anders Gråberg rode.

Every prize-money placing in each of the eight races counts — not just the winners. The turf was heavy, the dirt track fast. Three horses were withdrawn (Silwan and Bahia Mar because of the going, Angelo barred from the start), so 51 of 54 declared came to post. The Norwegian Oaks and the closing two-year-old race had only four finishers, so NOK 1,146,300 of the 1,168,800 pool was paid out.
