Francisco Castro’s great patience paid off on Wednesday evening, when the Jägersro trainer secured the sale’s most expensive colt with a bid of €72,000 at the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale at Kildare Paddocks. Castro bought lot 812, a bay Coulsty half-brother to the Prix Jean Romanet (Gr.1) winner Aristia.

“I knew already on Monday that this was the horse I had to wait for. There were more than 600 yearlings at the sale, but this one was part of the supplement after the Orby Sale, and to my eye he was the best individual of them all”, says Francisco Castro, whose judgement was borne out by the market itself, with the Coulsty colt ending up as the dearest colt of the sale.
The yearling was sold by Rathasker Stud and is by the stud’s own stallion Coulsty (Kodiac), who among other things won the Prix de Meautry (Gr.3) at Deauville – the same race Great Wish (Night Of Thunder) won earlier this season.

The dam Aloisi (Kalanisi) is out of the French Listed winner Bellona (Bering) and a half-sister to the outstanding broodmare Es Que, who has produced the Hong Kong Vase (Gr.1) winner Dominant, the Prix du Conseil de Paris (Gr.2) winner Listen In, the Group 2-winning stallion Es Que Love and the Listed winner Zhui Feng.
At stud Aloisi has, besides Castro’s new acquisition, produced the Prix Jean Romanet (Gr.1) winner Aristia (Starspangledbanner) and the Listed winner Glorious Sinndar (Sinndar). Her daughter Daloisi (Marchand de Sable) is in turn the dam of the Listed winner Domagnano. Of Aloisi’s twelve previous foals, ten have raced and nine of them have won.

Castro bought the colt on behalf of yet another newly formed consortium of owners recruited from harness racing – an approach that in recent years has produced names such as the Voter winner Papa Joe (Kodi Bear) and three of this year’s really good two-year-old winners at Jägersro, headed by the Skåneland winner Matteusinthejungle (Bungle Inthejungle) along with Jack Dawson (Cotai Glory) and High Coast Love (Coulsty).
“It is the television personality Matteus Lillieborg who has been the big driving force behind these consortiums, and it has meant a great deal to my stable that a whole new set of owners has suddenly appeared, and that their wins over the past couple of years have increased the appetite for being involved with racehorses”, says Francisco Castro, who with the recent addition of international yearlings is back up to around 20 horses in training.
