Female trainers took all five races at Bro Park

Only female trainers won at Bro Park, and Madeleine Smith took two of the five races — one of them with herself in the saddle

Wednesday’s card at Bro Park was made up of five races on the dirt track, and all five winners were trained by women. Madeleine Smith saddled two of them and rode one home herself, while the feature, the Ulriksdals Minneslöpning, went to Annika Sjökvist’s Sir Brian.

Smith won both of hers

Bolzano (Gale Force Ten) opened the day in the class 4 handicap over 2350 metres. The 3-year-old gelding was settled a long way behind the leaders. Over the final 200 metres Bolzano caught Nikki (Appel Au Maitre) and won by a length.

Paulo Lopes rode for Madeleine Smith, who owns the gelding together with Lise-Lotte Ziemann, and King Kaye (Hurricane Red) was third.

In the class 1 handicap over 1200 metres Smith was in the saddle herself on Diamond Soul (Profitable). The 6-year-old gelding kept his powder dry behind the leading Golden Dreams (Girolamo).

Three quarters of a length separated the pair at the line, and the first prize of 62,000 kronor was the second biggest of the day. Jiff’s Army (Saxon Warrior) was third.

Sir Brian let nobody past

The Ulriksdals Minneslöpning over 1600 metres, worth 200,000 kronor, was a controlled performance from Sir Brian (Zaahid). The 3-year-old gelding took charge early on the outside of Essential and King Cooper, built a small advantage through the turn and let nobody past in the straight.

Approval (Wentworth) finished well, but three quarters of a length still separated them at the end, and Falkor (Barocci) was third. Alina Öhgren rode for Annika Sjökvist, and the winner, bred by Sonja Olsson, runs for Racehorses and Bubbles — the stable’s twelve Swedish wins going into Wednesday are more than anyone else has managed this year.

Tight finishes late in the day

The last two races were both settled by a head. In the class 5 race over 1600 metres Magically (Intello) sat fourth behind Rationale, Beckham and Yarina, moved up on a strong run and took command over the final 200 metres.

The strongly finishing Brooklyn (Geniale) drew alongside, but the 3-year-old filly kept him behind her in the closing strides and won for Caroline Malmborg’s own stable with Per-Anders Gråberg riding. Sharp Eye (Rajsaman), also from Malmborg’s yard, was third.

The maiden over 1200 metres closed the day with a debut win for the 2-year-old Belle Approach (Mehmas). She was not the quickest away from the stalls but led into the home turn, and when Charming Rita (Juniper Tree) got close over the last 300 metres she found more and won by a head.

Maikel Narvaez Bravo rode for Kajsa Svensson Holmsten, who is in her first season as a trainer and now has five wins from 16 starts. Moonkicker (Red Cactus) was third.

Five in the money for Wahl

Patrick Wahl saddled the biggest team of the day with seven runners, and five of them made the frame without any of them winning: King Kaye was third in the opener, Approval and Falkor second and third in the Ulriksdals Minneslöpning, and Charming Rita and Moonkicker second and third in the maiden.
