There are races where the result itself is only half the story. Schamyl (Appel Au Maitre) won the Stockholm Cup International (Gr.3) over 2400 metres in convincing style on Sunday afternoon, and with that victory the Danish-bred gelding closed a circle that has been seventeen years in the making for the Neuroth family.
Nicolaj Stott rode an excellent race. He kept his horse waiting, took the shortest way round the final part of the home turn, and when the order came, Schamyl answered at once.
At the line there were two lengths back to the German-trained Nastaria (Outstrip), who could not defend last year’s title, and another length to the Marit Sveaas (Gr.3) winner War Socks (Kameko).
Jan-Erik Neuroth also took fourth with Stall Perlen’s Zakopane (Zarak), while Claymore (New Bay) was fifth and Disraeli (Barocci) sixth.
The first prize of SEK 500,000 went to Stall Petterøe’s Mix, and it was the first time that both the trainer and the jockey had won the Stockholm Cup International.
Jan-Erik Neuroth was visibly moved afterwards. With tears rolling down his cheeks he spoke about the eighteen months it took to get Schamyl back after the injury the gelding sustained in the wake of his three-year-old season. And what a season it had been: Svenskt Derby, the Norwegian Derby, Svenskt St. Leger and the Breeders’ Trophy Classic in the same year.
The comeback came this summer, when Schamyl won the Oslo Cup (L) in early July ahead of that same Zakopane. Now he has added a group race.
The story behind the win reaches further back than Schamyl’s own spell on the sidelines.
Jan-Erik Neuroth is the son of Wido Neuroth, who won the Stockholm Cup three years running in 2007, 2008 and 2009 — and who never won it again before he handed the business on to his son.
Wido Neuroth’s winner in both 2007 and 2008 was Appel Au Maitre — Touch Of Hawk completed the sequence the following year — and the stallion has now become the sire of a Stockholm Cup winner himself.

Schamyl was bred at Stutteri Hjortebo and is out of Whistler (Academy Award), who herself won Svenskt Oaks and the Danish Breeders’ Cup, and who was likewise bred at Hjortebo.
Whistler is a daughter of the former Scandinavian champion mare Wings Of A Dove, which makes Schamyl’s win the third link in a family of mares that Scandinavia’s reigning champion breeder has built up over many years at home in Bjerringbro.
Behind the first six in the Stockholm Cup International (Gr.3) came Espen Hill (Helsinki), who won the race in 2023, along with Optimus Bling (Frankel) and Double Ux (Magician).
