Sunshine and two staying contests worth 50,000 Norwegian kroner to the winner set the scene for Wednesday’s lunchtime meeting at Øvrevoll. Stall Lilleville’s Light Garden followed up his second place in the Norwegian St. Leger by winning the Norsk Galopp Cup – Sølvstayer, while Tonje Guttulsrød’s homebred Diggit took the Grunn Stayer.
Light Garden (Almanzor) was sent to the front by apprentice Jacob Kvisla and led all the way. The four-year-old gelding won by three and a half lengths from Team Finn Kristiansen’s Captain Chorus (Paco Boy), with three-quarters of a length back to his stablemate My French Dream (Myboycharlie) in third.
It was Light Garden‘s fourth win from 21 career starts. Six days earlier he was second in the Norwegian St. Leger behind Galactico Bling, and last year he finished fourth in the Norwegian Derby.
Last year’s winner of the Major Chr. F. Michelets Minneløp, Tobias Hellgren’s Redirect (Prince of Lir), finished last of the six.
In the Grunn Stayer Warning Shot (Falco) went off in front, while Lorenzo Putzulu had Diggit (Deceptor) well placed. Up the straight there was no doubt about who was strongest: Diggit won by four and a quarter lengths from Pål Nordbye’s Prinsen (Giant Sandman), with a further three lengths back to Åge Mathisen’s Warning Shot.
It was a 12th win from 59 starts for the six-year-old gelding, who is owned, bred and trained by Tonje Guttulsrød.
“He has actually been in form all along, but it hasn’t quite come together. Now he produced a really good race, and it was fun to win again,” she told Øvrevoll.
The closing two-year-old race over 1,370 metres was a show of strength by Bling Enterprise’s Inzain Bling (Hello Youmzain).
The hot favourite drew clear under Carlos Lopez and won by six lengths from the debutant Alonzo (Alson), with a further three lengths back to Hannibalatthegates (Profitable).
Inzain Bling had made his debut with a third place in the Norsk Kriterium on Derby day in August. The win was Niels Petersen’s second of the day.
“This horse is going to be good, and we will see what we choose to do going forward. We had good control of the race today and look forward to what comes next,” said Niels Petersen, who this weekend sends several favourites to big races in Denmark and Sweden.
Four of the seven two-year-olds were making their debuts. Behind the first three came Annike Bye Hansen’s Not Your Darling (Moohaajim), who on her first start was a quarter of a length away from third. Taroona Queen (Best Solution) was fifth, and Flaming Vision (Juniper Tree), who lost three lengths at the start, sixth.
Petersen’s first win came in the Bronsedivisjon over 1,100 metres on the dirt, where Marianne Petersen’s Shazam Bling (Elzaam) had an awkward draw but was driven out by Carlos Lopez to get past Mrs Dowley (Footstepsinthesand) close home.
The margin was a quarter of a length to Are Hyldmo’s mare under Jacob Kvisla, with five lengths back to Corazon De Leon (Slade Power).
Silja Støren completed a double of a different kind in the Grunndivisjon: her Lady Denali (Sporting Chance) and Coppola (Barocci) finished first and second.
Oliver Wilson was well placed behind the leaders on Lady Denali and settled it to win comfortably by a length – the mare’s second success in 26 starts.
The day’s opening race, the Sølvdivisjon over 1,600 metres, was all about the women: the first four horses home were all ridden by female riders.
Champagnegaloppen.no’s Hawaii Five O (Kameko) took the lead early with Nora Hagelund Holm and held a length over Nathalie Mortensen’s Want Want (Kuroshio) under apprentice Engla Tunmar. Another length back came Zofi (Mutajally) with Elin Hedman.
“He has good ability and is good when he performs at his best. Nora carried out the job perfectly, and I am very happy with the performance today,” said Annike Bye Hansen, who travels to Stockholm on Sunday with several horses.
Aphelios stays at home, though: “We are instead aiming at the Arnfinn Lunds Minneløp at Øvrevoll next Sunday.”
