It took a million on the line before Flamboyant won her first race. The Patrick Wahl-trained filly came to the Magic Million with two placings in maidens and a sixth in the Breeders’ Trophy Juvenile behind Voix Du Maitre, and on Sunday afternoon she closed down Chariot and Hello Darling over the last 150 metres.
The first prize was SEK 500,000, and on top of that came a bonus of SEK 100,000.
“I spoke to Jacob Johansen, who has ridden Flamboyant before. He told me that she can gallop but is a little nervy. We got a good race, and I tried to keep her calm. It worked out well”, Oliver Wilson told Svensk Galopp’s Anna Thelander afterwards.
Flamboyant (Mustajeeb) was bought back for SEK 70,000 at last year’s yearling sale at Bro Park. She was bred by Rävdansens Stuteri, and the stud was in fact behind both of the first two home: Silja Stören-trained Chariot (Barocci), who was second under Manuel Martinez, is also a Rävdansen-bred filly.
Third place went to Väsby Häst AB’s Hello Darling (Alson) with Elione Chaves for Annike Bye Hansen, while Nocturne Belle (Appel Au Maitre) was fourth.
Patrick Wahl had seven of the 15 runners and also took fifth and sixth with Schakalen (Jimmy Mack) and Satellite (Mustajeeb) — the latter by the same sire as the winner.
“The Magic Million has been a deliberate target on my part, and now it has paid off”, said the trainer, who at the same time laid his cards on the table about the choice of favourite in his own yard.
“I had the highest hopes for Satellite, but there are many pieces that have to fall into place in a race like this. Flamboyant is a horse I have always rated highly, but she has previously had a few problems with her nerves and never quite got it together”, Patrick Wahl concluded.
