Scandinavia’s most talked-about two-year-old did it again, and he did it without being asked a serious question. Romanov (Starspangledbanner) won the Appel Au Maitre Svealandlöpning by five lengths and is now unbeaten in four starts.
Carlos Lopez let his horse drop back a little after the start, but when he asked for more with 300 metres to run, the answer came at once.
Past the line there were five commanding lengths back to Søren Jensen’s Danish Kriterium runner-up Mallee Sand (Footstepsinthesand), who for the second time came up short against Romanov, this time by the shortest possible margin from Caledon Boy (Calyx) in third.
“This horse is incredibly good, and today he was simply playing with his rivals. Romanov is not that big, but he is very brave”, Carlos Lopez told Svensk Galopp’s Anna Thelander after the win.
Romanov is an Irish import, bred by Rosemont Stud, and he runs for the Danish Elkær Stutteri.
The sequence began with his debut at Øvrevoll on 2 July, continued with the Goffs Futurity Stakes on Klampenborg’s Derby day on 1 August and the Norsk Kriterium on 23 August — and after the Norsk Kriterium Niels Petersen said that the horse is so good that he deserves to be tried outside Scandinavia.
“Romanov is an extremely talented horse, and he made it look very easy today. I have to have a word with the owners about what we do next, but there is a lot to suggest that this was his last start of the year”, said Niels Petersen.
Romanov was bought for €110,000 through Niels Petersen’s agent Edgar Byrne at last year’s Goffs Orby Yearling Sale at Kildare Paddocks.
Behind the first three came Mr Handsome (Bayside Boy), Mattea Volante (Acclamation) and L.T. Racing’s Space Memory (Space Blues), while Al Rihla (Caturra), second in the Norsk Kriterium, was seventh ahead of Beeorenottobee (Bee Jersey).
