Champion mare Ascot Brass’ first foal topped the Scandinavian Open Yearling Sale

Stall Sigfridsson’s Epsom Gold, the first foal out of the champion mare Ascot Brass, was Friday’s most expensive lot at the Scandinavian Open Yearling Sale, knocked down at DKK 350,000 to Beatrice Marsing. Overall the Scandinavian Open Yearling Sale came in below last year’s level, but the top of the market found its buyers.

Beatrice and Nicole Marsing with the Scandinavian Open Yearling Sale’s top lot, number 74 by Muhaarar out of Ascot Brass (Juniper Tree).

Friday’s auction at York Stutteri found its most expensive horse a good way into the catalogue. Lot 74, Epsom Gold, a bay filly by the four-time Group 1 winner Muhaarar, is the first foal out of Ascot Brass — champion two-year-old filly in Scandinavia in 2019, champion three-year-old filly the following year, eleven wins from two to six in Sweden, Norway and Denmark and SEK 5,432,307 in earnings.

She was second in the Cape Verdi Stakes (Gr.2) and third in the Balanchine Stakes (Gr.2) at Meydan.

Stall Sigfridsson AB, who bred the dam themselves, sold the daughter to Beatrice Marsing for DKK 350,000. The filly now goes into training with Søren Jensen at Klampenborg.

Eight lots over 200,000

Behind her came a field in which eight yearlings changed hands for DKK 200,000 or more.

Lot 88, a bay colt by Courage Under Fire out of Eko Palace Bay, went from Stutteri Outback to Susanne Sivrup Rosenquist for 300,000.

Lot 1, Stutteri Hjortebo’s Irish-bred Kameko colt out of Flammable, was sold to Swedish Väsby Häst AB for 280,000 in a private sale, and lot 56 — the grey Moohaajim colt out of the Oaks winner Silverstone, whose family was updated in the very week before the sale by Stepdance‘s win in the Dansk Kriterium — ended up with Stald Chili for 270,000.

Two yearlings shared 250,000: York Stutteri’s Footstepsinthesand colt out of Victoria Placa (lot 63) to 1887 Consulting A/S / Stald Sotto, and Staffan Lidbeck Veterinär AB’s grey Appel Au Maitre colt out of I Rely (lot 20) to Lars Jakobsen & Chris Petersen.

The latter is a half-brother to this year’s winner of the Danish 2000 Guineas and the Jydsk Derby, Albarella (Toronado).

Lindegården gave 230,000 for Hjortebo’s Mishriff colt out of Lily Rose (lot 23), and Stald Klampenborg 210,000 for the Moohaajim filly out of Princess Luna (lot 43).

Stutteri Hjortebo sold 13 of its 15 yearlings and accounted on its own for DKK 1,915,000 — just under 39 per cent of the whole auction’s turnover. Stall Sigfridsson sold all four they offered, and York Stutteri five out of seven.

The figures

91 yearlings were catalogued, five were withdrawn before the sale, and 86 came into the ring. 52 changed hands — eight of them in private sales — while 34 were bought back by their vendors.

Turnover came to DKK 4,940,000 against 7,639,500 last year, a fall of 35 per cent. The average price fell from DKK 127,325 to DKK 95,000, and the clearance rate from 71.4 to 60.5 per cent.

The number of yearlings offered was all but unchanged: 86 against 84.

The median price ended at DKK 65,000 — half of the lots sold, in other words, went for that figure or above. The ten most expensive accounted between them for exactly half of the turnover, and sixteen yearlings reached DKK 100,000 or more.

A cooler market

The picture is therefore of a market where the supply was the same, but where fewer buyers stayed in all the way to the top. That is not unique to Scandinavia; the European yearling sales have shown a wider spread between the top and the middle of the market throughout the season.

The article will be updated with photographs during Saturday.
