A month on from the Svenskt Oaks at Jägersro, Lady Irene has another Classic to her name. Niels Petersen saddled three fillies for the BOLOU Fine Jewellery Danish Oaks on Saturday afternoon, and the best two of them pulled clear of the field over the final 400 metres.
Lady Irene (Study Of Man) crossed the line three and a half lengths clear of Jazz (Juniper Tree), with a further two and a half lengths back to Stall Perlen’s Nouvelle Fleur (Study Of Man).
The first prize was worth DKK 150,000 to Stall United.
It was a one-two for Niels Petersen in the race itself, and for Elkær Stutteri it meant second place with their own homebred Jazz — on a day when the stud also won the Racing Club Klampenborg Racing Bowl with Grey Tycoon.
Carlos Lopez was in the saddle on the winner, who left the stalls as the favourite at 3.59. The bay filly is by Study Of Man, out of the Galileo mare Special Gal, and was bred by Ballylinch Stud in Ireland.
Special Gal is no longer at Ballylinch Stud, however: before Lady Irene was sold to Scandinavia through the agent Edgar Byrne, Rävdansens Stuteri had already bought her in foal to the multiple Group 1 winner State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner) at the 2024 renewal of the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale at Kildare Paddocks.
Behind the first three came Lokalebasen.dk’s Red Moondancer (Appel Au Maitre), half a length behind Nouvelle Fleur, while Søren Jensen’s Nevermore (Gleneagles) took the last of the prizes after being prominent for most of the way.
Niels Petersen’s third filly, Bahia Mar (Swipe), who was third in the Svenskt Oaks last time out, was not involved in the finish.
On 2 August Lady Irene won the Svenskt Oaks by a length, and with two of the three Scandinavian Oaks in the bag she now has something in front of her that no filly before her has managed.
“Her next start will be in the Norsk Oaks,” Niels Petersen told GalopSport after the race.
So far 21 fillies have won two of the three Scandinavian Oaks, but none has yet managed to win all three.
The Swedish-Danish double is by far the most common, and has now happened 12 times – Stove Sister (1970), Farina (1975), Rush (1976), Oline (1980), Humbug (1982), Rossard (1983), Singvanna (1985), Gyllen (1986), Rosenobler (1987), Kazoo (1991), Halfsong (2003) – and now Lady Irene in 2026.
