Lord Greystoke took the 100th Svenskt St. Leger

Göteborg closed its season on Saturday with 1,341,840 Swedish kronor shared out over nine races, and the 100th running of Svenskt St. Leger went to Glæsner Racing’s Lord Greystoke (Ulysses). Niels Petersen and Carlos Lopez thereby repeated the feat from Svenskt Derby in July, when the same trio won with Doc Holliday (Appel Au Maitre).

Lord Greystoke went clear at the start of the home straight and won by five lengths from Lennart J:r Reuterskiöld’s Icefall (Juniper Tree), who in turn had six lengths back to Nevermore (Gleneagles). Søren Jensen’s filly held third by a head from Dancingonarainbow (Juniper Tree).

The first three home are all owned in Denmark, and the first prize was worth 300,000 kronor to Kiri and Tom Glæsner Larsen.

The Irish-bred three-year-old colt was bred by Norelands Bloodstock and came to Göteborg from a third place in the Norwegian Derby behind Super Smooth (Quarterback).

“Lord Greystoke’s sire has produced many fine stayers, and the St. Leger has been part of the plan for him all along. Today he ran relaxed and handled the slightly slippery turf well”, Carlos Lopez told Svensk Galopp after the race.

For Niels Petersen the win also settled the trainers’ championship at Göteborg. “The Norwegian Derby was the big target when we bought Lord Greystoke, but this year Øvrevoll’s track was considerably faster than it usually is at the end of August, and that did not suit him. Hopefully he can develop into a really good stayer next year”, said the trainer.

Kiri and Tom Glæsner Larsen bought Lord Greystoke for €140,000 through agent Edgar Byrne at the 2024 Goffs Orby Sale at Kildare Paddocks.

Jan-Erik Neuroth, who had won the last two runnings of Svenskt St. Leger, scratched both of his entries, Blushing Zone and Amazing Pace, who came out with a wound and an abscess respectively. Stall Perlen was thus left without a runner in a race the stable has won four of the last five times.

Gråberg’s double

Per-Anders Gråberg secured the jockeys’ championship at the track with his second win of the day. First he took the Class 3 handicap on Stall Birgitta’s Juniper Fox (Juniper Tree) by half a length from Mumbo Jumbo (Moohaajim), and later the Class 5 sprint on Marianne Halberg and Kajsa Lindsjö’s You Better Move On (Exceed And Excel) by three lengths from Lush Life (Appel Au Maitre).

“I suppose it shows that I have done something right this year after all”, said Gråberg.

Carlos Lopez also had a double. Besides the classic he won the juvenile maiden on Stall Svea Racing’s Gunnar Enlund (Armor), who beat Jan-Erik Neuroth’s Bourbon Blaze (Victor Ludorum) by nearly three lengths.

Sophia Andersson trained both the winner and the third, Tohightobeonline (Armor). “After a fairly poor season for the stable this win feels absolutely wonderful”, she said.

The day’s second richest race, Adalöpning over 1400 metres for fillies and mares, was won by Väsby Häst’s Meelaf (Iffraaj) with Nicolaj Stott in the saddle.

She held Irish Lioness (Invincible Army) at a length’s distance. “The important thing with Meelaf is that she does not get to the front too early. Today Nicolaj rode her to perfection”, said trainer Annike Bye Hansen.

Hellgren took both hurdles again

In the amateurs’ Börjes Champion Ark Cup 9 Åge Mathisen’s Norok (Gammarth) won a tight finish by half a length from Steely Queen (Outstrip). Tonje Sörvang thereby ended the year as the winning-most amateur rider at Göteborg.

The two jumps races belonged to practically one stable.

Tobias Hellgren had both a training double and a one-two in each: first the Danish-bred Ghost Town (Go Go Gadget) won the novice hurdle by twelve lengths from his stablemate True Dane (Juniper Tree), and later New York Strip (Appel Au Maitre) took his 11th win in a row in Berthram Häcklöpning over 4800 metres by two lengths from the only other runner in the field, his stablemate Lionell (Appel Au Maitre).

Anna Pilroth rode both winners for Tobias Hellgren. “It is a shame that such a fine hurdle race drew only two runners. Even so, I thought it was fascinating to watch”, said the winning trainer.

The final day at Göteborg was opened by Peter Jardby’s American Lily (Bernardini) with apprentice Marika Masuhr in the saddle.
