Annike Bye Hansen and Elione Chaves shared out most of Sunday’s card at Øvrevoll between them. The pair won three of the day’s four big races – the Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 2-årige, the Arnfinn Lunds Minneløp (L) and finally the Breeders’ Prize Classic, where Stall Lillemax’s Another Beauty collected 333,255 Norwegian kroner. The day’s biggest winning margin came in the other Breeders’ race, though, where Sporty won by close to 14 lengths.
The daughter of a Guineas winner
The Breeders’ Prize Classic over 1,980 metres was the day’s biggest contest with 333,255 kroner to the winner and 37,028 to the breeder – and Stall Lillemax took both.
Another Beauty (Appel Au Maitre) is both owned and bred by the stable, and Elione Chaves brought her home three-quarters of a length clear of Stall GM’s Miss Hurricane (Quarterback).
It was the third time in five weeks that the two fillies had met. In the Drømmemilen on 23 August Another Beauty was fifth and Miss Hurricane second; in the Norsk Mesterskap for 3-åringer on 10 September Another Beauty won by three lengths, and now the margin was three-quarters.
Gina Mathisen took second and third, for three and a half lengths behind Miss Hurricane came the Norwegian Derby winner Super Smooth (Quarterback).
A length and a half further back came Stald Klampenborg’s King To Be (Moohaajim), while Elkær Stutteri’s Jazz (Juniper Tree) was fifth. The Swedish Derby winner Doc Holliday (Appel Au Maitre) finished sixth.
The story behind the win is worth picking up: Annike Bye Hansen also trained the winner’s dam, Unwanted Beauty, who won the Norwegian 1000 Guineas in 2019 in the same colours.
And Appel Au Maitre has now sired five of the last eleven winners of the Breeders’ Prize Classic – Appelina in 2016, Jane in 2018, Hear The Drums in 2022, Leo Boy in 2024 and now Another Beauty.
The Breeders’ Prize Classic itself, on the other hand, Annike Bye Hansen had not won before.
Sporty drew clear
Nobody got near Stall NOK’s Sporty (Moohaajim) in the Breeders’ Prize Sprint over 1,370 metres.
Carlos Lopez sent his horse straight to the front and the field never saw him again: the margin was 13¾ lengths, the time 1.20,5, and the first prize 227,420 kroner plus 25,268 to the breeder Øien Gård.
It was Sporty‘s fourth win from six starts and his first run since the Drømmemilen on 23 August – he was scratched from the Breeders’ Trophy Classic at Bro Park with a wound. Sporty was born in Denmark but bred in Norway at Øien Gård, Knut Martin Torgersen’s farm – the same place where the day’s other Breeders’ winner, Another Beauty, grew up. Niels Petersen trains.
Lea Olsen’s Viktors Dream (Giant Sandman) held second under Elione Chaves, three-quarters of a length ahead of Väsby Häst AB’s Plattan I Mattan (Alson).
Buck Racing’s Buck’s Model (Economic Model) was fourth and Nathalie Mortensen’s My Dole (Appel Au Maitre) fifth.
Another Listed win for Aphelios
Väsby Häst AB’s Aphelios (Kodiac) had skipped Bro Park to go for the Arnfinn Lunds Minneløp (L), and the plan worked.
The seven-year-old gelding won by three-quarters of a length from Bettina Andersen’s My Fortune (Appel Au Maitre), and from there it was half a length to Icon Bling (Lope De Vega), who won the race last year, and a head further to Silver Legend (Dark Angel).
The win was Aphelios‘s 19th from 43 starts and worth 150,000 kroner in first prize.
For Annike Bye Hansen it was a second win in the race after Swedish Dream in 2019. Bettina Andersen was behind both the second and the fourth.
Ice And Fire beaten
The Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 2-årige gave Väsby Häst AB the day’s first big-race win when Not Your Darling (Moohaajim) scored by two and a half lengths. The filly was bred at Stutteri Hjortebo and had only one start behind her – a fourth place at Øvrevoll on 16 September.
The unbeaten Ice And Fire (Oasis Dream) was thus beaten for the first time. Stald Chasing Dreams’ filly, who had won both her debut and the ITM Amacitalöpning, was second ahead of Alonzo, Orkan Q, Taroona Queen and Dalero.
The rest of the day
Sunday opened with the Øvrevoll Hesteeierforenings Jubileumsløp, where Soltun Racing AS’s Spinaround (Kodiac) won by a quarter of a length from Corazon De Leon for Hallvard Soma and Jacob Johansen.
In the Klokkeløp III for amateur riders Stall Hope’s Queen Of Hearts (Pistachio) won by two and a quarter lengths from Emmeline; Sofie Endahl rode, Pål Nordbye trains.
The Norsk Galopp Cup – Bronsemile was the day’s tightest: Stall Lilleville’s Porter (Too Darn Hot) won by a length and a quarter for Are Hyldmo and Jacob Johansen, but behind him a neck, a nose and a head separated the next four horses, who all came home in the same time.
Finally Stall Matheniss’s Masters Romance (Appel Au Maitre) took the Bronsedivisjon over 2,400 metres by half a length from Away Wit Da Fairys. Isidro Vergara trains, André De Oliveira rode.
Jacob Johansen also rode two winners on the day, Spinaround and Porter.
