A year ago Galactico Bling had to settle for second place in the Norwegian St. Leger. At Øvrevoll on Thursday evening, Bling Enterprise’s four-year-old son of Galileo justified strong favouritism and landed the Classic over 2,830 metres for Niels Petersen and Carlos Lopez ahead of Light Garden and Mauna Queen – while Derby winner Super Smooth finished last of the four.
Galactico Bling (Galileo) scored comfortably by three lengths from Stall Lilleville’s Light Garden (Almanzor), who in turn finished just under four lengths clear of last year’s Norwegian Oaks winner Mauna Queen (Inns Of Court). Just under two lengths further back came Super Smooth (Quarterback).
The first prize of 100,000 Norwegian kroner was also a small measure of redress for Bling Enterprise, whose Phantom Bling (New Bay) was beaten three-quarters of a length by none other than Super Smooth in the Norwegian Derby on 25 August.
Galactico Bling was second in last year’s St. Leger, four lengths behind If He Says So (Summer Front), and has now won four of his five starts this year. He was bred by Coolmore Stud and is out of the Mastercraftsman mare Wind Chimes.
He is also one of the youngest offspring from Galileo‘s final crop.
Oliver Wilson had ridden the gelding to three wins earlier in the season for his former trainer Jan-Erik Neuroth, but in the St. Leger it was Carlos Lopez in the saddle for Niels Petersen.
Petersen and Lopez had last won the race together in 2019 with Privilegiado (Sea The Moon), who took the Norwegian Triple Crown that same year.
For Super Smooth it was a first meeting with older horses, and at the same time 430 metres further than he had ever raced before. Light Garden, a winner over 2,400 metres on Derby day itself, filled second for Are Hyldmo and Jacob Johansen.
The evening’s second championship, the Norsk Mesterskap for 3-åringer over 1,600 metres, went to Another Beauty (Appel Au Maitre). Elione Chaves steered her to a three-and-a-half-length success over Miss Hurricane (Quarterback), with the favourite Charlie Nosto (Mutajally), last year’s two-year-old champion, a further two and a half lengths back.
Another Beauty is owned and bred by Stall Lillemax and trained by Annike Bye Hansen. She is out of the Iffraaj mare Unwanted Beauty, and her sire is Stall Perlen’s former Norwegian and Swedish Derby winner Appel Au Maitre.
It was her second win from seven starts, and a clear case of revenge. In the Drømmemilen for Norwegian-breds on 23 August she finished fifth with Miss Hurricane second, and in the Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 3-åringer in July she was runner-up to Super Smooth.
Miss Hurricane‘s full brother Orkan Q (Quarterback) had opened the evening by landing the Norsk Mesterskap for 2-åringer over 1,170 metres.
Willa Synøve Schou rode him to a three-length win over Shogun (Moohaajim), while hot favourite Dalero (Appel Au Maitre) had to settle for third, a good four lengths further back. Sweet Abigail (Mutajally) was fourth.
Orkan Q was having only his second start, having finished fifth on debut over the same trip on 6 August. Gina Mathisen is owner, breeder and trainer, and his dam Silent Storm (Deceptor) herself finished fourth in the 2017 Norwegian Derby.
With first, second and fourth places in the evening’s three big races, Stall GM collected 166,000 Norwegian kroner – more than any other owner.
Elione Chaves completed a double in the Sølvdivisjon over 900 metres on turf, where Cathrine Erichsen-trained French Chunky (French Fifteen) held off Canmore (No Nay Never) by a head. Three-quarters of a length away in third came nine-year-old Youonlyliveonce (Sidestep). Both the winner and the third had come out of the Polar Cup (L) on Derby day, where they finished eighth and ninth.
The Øvrevoll Hesteeierforenings Klokkeløp II for amateur riders went to Hallvard Soma-trained Elderflower (Ten Sovereigns) under Mie Blichfeldt, who already led the Klokke series.
The pair won by three lengths from Boaz (Deceptor) and Iselin Gjertsen, while Norsk Galopp’s 72-year-old chairman Finn Kristiansen rode his own Lucky Diamond (Hallucinate) into third. For Elderflower it was a first success of the season after two seconds with Blichfeldt in July.
The biggest winning margin of the day came in the Jerndivisjon over 2,400 metres on the dirt, where eight-year-old Prinsen (Giant Sandman) was untouchable under André De Oliveira and pulled eleven and a half lengths clear of Warning Shot (Falco). Stall Hope’s homebred was thus recording only the second win of his career, at his 25th start – and both have come this year. His stablemate Robbie Brown (Mutajally) was third, a further five lengths back.
The evening closed with a win for Hanne Rådstoga, who as owner, breeder and trainer watched Stogas Storm (Evasive) score for the second time in a row under Manuel Martinez.
He held off the Danish-bred Queen Of Hearts (Pistachio) by three-quarters of a length, with Emmeline (Evasive) a further three-quarters of a length back – the same horse Stogas Storm had beaten by a length last time out on 19 August.
