Evelina Rönnlund took the Aalborg jockeys’ championship with a hat-trick

Evelina Rönnlund won three of the races for Tina Mortensen and secured the jockeys' championship

Aalborg closed its thoroughbred season on Saturday afternoon on fine, soft autumn ground, and the four races brought every championship at the track to a conclusion. Evelina Rönnlund won three of them for Tina Mortensen and rose from eighth place to the title of the track’s champion jockey, while Big Hunter secured Aalborg Horse of the Year in the Birte Sørensen Memorial.

Three wins from four starts

Rönnlund began with Maziyah (Giant Sandman), who took the opening race by a neck from Liberian Girl (Wilshire Boulevard), with a further short head back to Dream On Sally (Girolamo).

The three-year-old filly now has three wins and a second from four starts for Kjell Ivar Brekstad and Tina Mortensen.

She was bred by Karsten and Hans J. Johansen and Stine Johansen, and she is the first foal to race out of Mariyna, third in the Opdrætningsløb — a half-sister to Malekha (Juniper Tree), third in the Derby, who won the Danish Oaks in 2020 and the Danish Breeders’ Cup the following year.

Through her dam line Maziyah is also a “cousin” of the two-year-old Mallee Sand (Footstepsinthesand), who this year has been second in both the Danish Kriterium and the Svealandlöpning and third in the Goffs Futurity Stakes for Søren Jensen, and a “niece” of the three-year-old Majidah (Juniper Tree), who shed her maiden tag at the first attempt on 14 October at Jägersro for Lennart Reuterskiöld Jr.

Call Me Al for the sixth time this year

In the day’s feature, the Kop og Kande Aalborg Store Handicap, Call Me Al (Al Shemali) carried all of 65 kilos and still won by a neck from Makaveli (Sands Of Mali).

It was the sixth win in 10 starts this year for the Tina Mortensen-trained gelding, and the first prize of 25,000 kroner was the day’s biggest.

Call Me Al is owned by Sussi Hald and was bred by Berner Olsen. The son of Al Shemali, out of the Breeders’ queen Golden Memory (Dexterity) and a grandson of Golden Line (Gabitat), winner of the Mowerinaløb and a dual Golden Mile winner, began 2026 on a handicap mark of 66, and he now ends it above 80.

The hat-trick completed with Mercur

Rönnlund and Mortensen completed the day with Mercur (Sir Wilberfourse) in the weight-for-age handicap, where the eight-year-old gelding won by a head from the strong-finishing debutant Sligo (Go Go Gadget).

It was Mercur‘s first win of the year, and he is a home-bred of Lis Lentz Jensen, who owns him together with Martin Jensen.

Big Hunter became Aalborg Horse of the Year 2026

The one race Tina and Evelina did not win turned into the day’s show of strength. Big Hunter (Juniper Tree) won the Birte Sørensen Memorial by six lengths from Camar (Advertise), and with it he secured Aalborg Horse of the Year on 78 points.

Tullamore (Al Shemali) was third, a short head away.

Jytte Løgtved’s gelding is both owned and trained by her and was ridden by Stine Bukballe. He was bred by York Stutteri and is a full brother to Two Eyed Jack, who won the Swedish Kriterium as a two-year-old in 2018 ahead of Queen Rouge (Lord Of England).

Lea Olsen had already secured the trainers’ championship with 138,040 kroner before the final day, but Tina Mortensen’s three wins lifted her to 116,840 and a commanding second place. Ann-Charlotte K. Wedsgaard was third with 90,440, ahead of Maria Løgtved’s 80,220.

Ann-Charlotte took the day’s second title in return. Cloudy Sky‘s (Cloth Of Stars) third place in the Aalborg Store Handicap brought the ownership of Else and Birgitte Nielsen and Ann-Charlotte K. Wedsgaard up to 64,840 kroner and past Karin Salling’s 60,000.

And the mare, whom Ann-Charlotte trains and part-owns herself, was at the same time the year’s highest-earning horse at the track on the very same figure.

Breeders shows more than eight names, because the amounts share a place – nobody drops out on a tie.
