Wednesday’s meeting at Øvrevoll turned into an afternoon out of the ordinary for breeder Maria Robertz. The debutant Dalero took the day’s best-endowed contest, the two-year-old race over 1370 metres on turf, and later on both Masters Romance and Bella Flamel won as well. All three were bred by Robertz – and Dalero and Bella Flamel are half-siblings into the bargain.
Stall Golden Chicks’ Dalero (Appel Au Maitre) and Oliver Wilson raced side by side with the Annike Bye Hansen-trained Mr Handsome (Bayside Boy) all the way up the straight, and only on the line was the issue settled – by a head in favour of the Jan-Erik Neuroth-trained Dalero. Behind them there was a gap of more than 12 lengths to Carte Blanche (Appel Au Maitre), who like the winner is trained by Neuroth.
Both Dalero and Mr Handsome were having the first start of their lives, and the first prize was worth NOK 40,950.
Dalero is Norwegian-bred, by Appel Au Maitre out of the Exceed And Excel mare Shine – and Shine could chalk up another winner later in the afternoon, when her three-year-old daughter Bella Flamel (Economic Model) got off the mark over 1600 metres on the dirt track.
The Niels Petersen-trained Bella Flamel was a hot favourite, and Carlos Lopez made all with Stall Amabel’s filly, who won by a good six lengths from Stall KamKaro’s Bay Zone (Appel Au Maitre) and Coppola (Barocci).
Bella Flamel had faced considerably tougher company earlier in the season: at the start of August she was second behind Zensation (White Soxs) in the Altamiralöpning at Jägersro, and on Derby day she lined up in the Drømmemilen.
In between the two Shine offspring, Stall Matheniss’ Masters Romance (Appel Au Maitre) produced the most dominant performance of the day. Carlos Lopez took over in front early on the Isidro Vergara-trained five-year-old mare, who brought home the Grunndivisjon over 2400 metres on dirt by more than 15 lengths from Åge Mathisen’s Warning Shot (Falco) and Svenn Anton Nosto (Mutajally).
It was Masters Romance‘s first career win, at the 17th attempt – before that she had four second places, most recently a fortnight ago over the same distance. Masters Romance, too, was bred by Maria Robertz.
The meeting had otherwise opened with a double for Are Hyldmo and Jacob Johansen. In the first race, the Grunndivisjon over 1100 metres on dirt, the Pål Nordbye-trained Queen Of Hearts (Pistachio) took the lead as usual under Lorenzo Putzulu, but the favourite Emmeline (Evasive), who runs for Stall Magic og Gull, got up to lead by a head right on the line. The Knut O. Arnesen-trained Machine Gun (Dark Angel) was third.
Hyldmo and Johansen followed up in the Sølvdivisjon over 1730 metres on turf, where Stall Lilleville’s Nope Never (No Nay Never) sat behind the front-running Hawaii Five O (Kameko) and won by two lengths from the Swedish Oscar Berneklint-trained Rebel’s Gamble (Dark Angel) with Oliver Wilson in the saddle. Cathrine Erichsen’s Kill That Cat (Mutajally) was third.
Are Hyldmo has always thought highly of Nope Never, but minor niggles have got in the way at times. Last year the five-year-old won the Thai Tanic Løp, and on Wednesday he recorded his first success of the season. According to Berneklint, Rebel’s Gamble is heading for the Arnfinn Lunds Minneløp later in the autumn.
The win with Emmeline was Are Hyldmo’s ninth as a trainer at Øvrevoll this year.
There was a Swedish success in the Bronsedivisjon over 1980 metres on turf, where the big outsider Tearaway Two (Churchill) pulled a good two lengths clear of the Hege Larsen Mjønli-trained Waikiki (Mastercraftsman) under Nora Hagelund Holm. The winner is owned by Nathalie Mortensen and trained by Annette Stjernstrand, who was also responsible for the third-placed Green Zabeel (Oasis Dream). It was Tearaway Two‘s first win of 2026.
Knut O. Arnesen had a one-two in the following Bronsedivisjon over 1370 metres on turf. Another big outsider, Inger Skrede’s Inshad (Gregorian), lost ground at the start but finished very strongly under André De Oliveira to win by three-quarters of a length from stablemate Realise The Dream (Magna Grecia), while the Poul Laursen-trained Honorah (Ardad) had led and held on for third.
The day ended with the Øvrevoll Hesteeierforenings Klokkeløp I for amateur riders, in which Sweden’s Tobias Hellgren saddled the eight-year-old Star Pakistan (Hallucinate) for a comfortable win of just under four lengths under Tanja Wilhelmsson. This Is Pippi (Barocci) had led with Mie Blichfeldt in the saddle but had to settle for second ahead of the favourite Terrible (Territories). According to Øvrevoll, it was Tobias Hellgren’s 200th win as a trainer.
Star Pakistan, who is owned by Olivia, Anneli, Viola and Viktoria Eriksson and was bred by Danny G. Chaudhry, was recording only the second win of his career, at his 26th start.
