Easy for Great Wish in the Championship Day Sprint

A small but quite high-quality field met in Saturday’s Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva Rum Championship Day Sprint over 1200 metres. Best on the day was the Bent Olsen-trained Great Wish, who is developing into a really good 4-year-old sprinter.

The son of Night Of Thunder won comfortably by two lengths for Carlos Lopez, who here took the first of four winners on the day, and he extended his lead in Klampenborg’s jockeys’ championship, where he is now up to 12 winners.

Great Wish won the Championship Day Sprint ahead of the ever-consistent Sandtastic (Footstepsinthesand), who also carried one kilo more on his back than his rival, and in third the 14-year-old Fiftyshadesfreed (Verglas) sprinted past the Scandinavian debutant Blueridge Silver (Siyouni).

There was DKK 50,000 in first prize for the estate of Lone Kaj-Nielsen, and it was a second win in as many starts this year for Great Wish, who has now won five of his first 12 career starts.

Great Wish has the further advantage that he is effective on both turf and dirt, so Bent Olsen has plenty of options going forward with the handsome chestnut colt.

Olsen incidentally got his second winner of the day in the Woodford Reserve Rye Bourbon Spring Handicap Class 3 over 1400 metres, where Susanne Springer’s 4-year-old Camar (Advertise) won after a thrilling battle in the straight and beat Navy Warrior (U S Navy Flag) and Quentino (Sea The Moon).

In the saddle on the winner was the Bulgarian Angel Alekov Yulianov, who really knew how to celebrate his win.

Camar won once as a 3-year-old last year, and this was his third start in 2025.
