Bente and Magne Jordanger turned down a bid of around one million kroner for Voix Du Maitre at last year’s Scandinavian Open Yearling Sale. On Sunday the Stall Perlen owners received the first big payday for that decision, as the Appel Au Maitre colt won the Breeders’ Trophy Juvenile (Tommy Gustafsson Memorial) and its SEK 400,000 first prize.
Voix Du Maitre (Appel Au Maitre) and Oliver Wilson were locked away behind horses for a long way, but when the gap came with just over 200 metres left there was an extra gear in reserve, and the colt swept past Niels Petersen’s I Got Lucky (Juniper Tree) and Bella Sienna (Study Of Man), who had taken over at the head of affairs entering the straight.
The winning margin was a length, with a further three lengths back from I Got Lucky to Bella Sienna. Lea Olsen’s Azisol (Appel Au Maitre) was fourth ahead of Hello Darling (Alson), Flamboyant (Mustajeeb) and Notorius (Swipe).
“We were stuck behind horses at the start of the straight. But when Voix Du Maitre got the gap, he quickened in real style. A complete horse with plenty of ability, who can surely be ridden from any position,” said Oliver Wilson after the race.
Voix Du Maitre is the first foal out of the Fastnet Rock mare Voix d’Amie, who won this very race for Stall Perlen in 2020, then trained by Wido Neuroth and ridden by Carlos Lopez.
Six years on it was the son, Jan-Erik Neuroth, who saddled the winner – and unlike his dam, Voix Du Maitre is Swedish-bred, which triggered a further SEK 50,000 bonus for Stall Perlen.
Voix Du Maitre skipped Norsk Kriterium at Øvrevoll last week to go for the even bigger money at Bro Park, and he has now won both his starts following the debut success over 900 metres at Øvrevoll in July.
“Voix Du Maitre is a very nice horse with both a good mind and a big engine. Today it was really only up the straight that he got properly to work. He could run in the Auktionsløb in Denmark, and after that I think he will be even better over 1,600 metres in Vinterfavoriternas Pris at Bro Park,” Jan-Erik Neuroth told Svensk Galopp.
Voix Du Maitre is, incidentally, closely related to the dual Scandinavian Open winner and Norwegian Derby hero Ami De Vega (Lope De Vega). Ami De Vega is a half-brother to Voix d’Amie, and they are themselves out of Stall Perlen’s formerly supreme champion racemare Amie Noire (Soldier Of Fortune).
Voix Du Maitre was born and raised with Jessica and Padraig Long in Skåne.
Seen through Danish eyes it was a strong afternoon on the breeding front: I Got Lucky was bred at York Stutteri and is out of the Appel Au Maitre mare Alwaysonmymind, Bella Sienna was bred by Cat Racing – also at York Stutteri – and Azisol is yet another Stutteri Hjortebo product.
Second place was worth SEK 200,000 to Airborne Racing, while Stall SMS collected SEK 80,000 for third.
The race was run with only nine runners after Othello Torkdahl, Justice, Michelle Est Belle, Thunderking and Chariot were all withdrawn, while Moonkicker was ruled out at the start.
