On Saturday afternoon the Wido Neuroth-trained Seneschal took care of the year’s last Classic contest in Sweden, Svenskt St. Leger.
Under Andreas Tapia Dalbark the Appel Au Maitre son won by a length ahead of Harry and the Norwegian Derby winner Whispering Ocean, while the Danish Derby and St. Leger winner Ready Teddy finished fourth.
It was the first win of his career for Seneschal, who has been campaigned in tough company throughout the season.
Right from his seasonal debut, when he was beaten five lengths by the later Voter and Derby winner Bullof Wall Street to second place behind The Maestro in Bro Park Classic and most recently fifth place behind Ascot Brass i Breeders’ Trophy Classic.
Finally the release came for Seneschal, who in the 12th start of his life shed the maiden tag – and that in Classic company at that.
Seneschal is both owned and bred by Stall EOS, and here we are dealing with a piece of breeding history that stretches more than 30 years back in time, namely back to 1990, when the Mas Media daughter Simmering came into the world.
She was herself out of the Bold Lad daughter Barely Hot, who two years earlier had produced Bechmann Racing’s long-time star sprinter and later stallion Hot Run (Commanche Run).
After a busy 2-year-old season with three wins in nine starts in England, Simmering was bought to Norway ahead of her 3-year-old season by Erik Otter Steen, the founder of the legendary Stall EOS, which his grandson Tom Erik Kjeseth carries on today in that very same spirit.
Simmering continued her career with Wido Neuroth at Øvrevoll and quickly established herself as a superstar of her crop.
Three weeks apart she won both Norsk 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas and took five wins in a row in all, before, in a battle against older mares, she finished third in Klaveness’ Minneløp (L) behind Matter Of Fact and Lovers Lullaby.
Later on, Simmering would win this very contest twice, just as she also struck as a 4-year-old in the German Listed contest Frankenheim Alt Pokal in Düsseldorf.
She was also second in Schwartsgold-Rennen (L) at Hoppegarten and Norsk Jockeyklubs Sprintløp (L).
When Simmering went to stud for Stall EOS she had won 12 times in three different countries, earned over a million and reached a handicap mark of 89.
In the breeding shed she became the dam of nine winners – among them the eight-time winner Solvana (Selkirk), who twice was second in Täby Open Sprint Championship (Gr.3), and in addition was second in Polar Cup (Gr.3) and Norsk Jockeyklubs Sprintløp.
Simmering also became the dam of the 14-time winner Simian (Okawango), who among other things won SM Sprinters no fewer than four times, and of the three-time big-race winner Kalle (Cajun Cadet), as well as the Listed-placed Simsala (Hernando) and the Classic-placed Simano (Desert Prince).
Simmering’s other winners at stud were Satom (Selkirk), State Of Law (Law Society), Silora (Lorofino) and Silmaris (Slickly).
The latter won as a 2-year-old and made her breeding debut in 2016 with the foaling of the filly Solaris (Reliable Man), who last year was second in Bro Park Trial.
Silmaris’ next foal was Seneschal. This year’s Swedish St. Leger winner.
Since then Silmaris has produced the 2-year-old Silvana (Reliable Man), who has already distinguished herself with two wins at Øvrevoll plus a third place in Skandinavisk Mesterskap for 2-åringer, and the filly even runs again on Sunday afternoon on her home track.
The latest addition out of Silmaris is the brown gelding from 2019, who was recently sold to the Danish 360 North Horse Racing for 320,000 Swedish kronor at SÅEFs Åringsauktion in Stockholm.
