The anniversary edition of Klampenborg’s venerable Pokalløb turned into a pure show of strength, as Mount Kilimanjaro won by five lengths for Niels Petersen and Carlos Lopez.
The Lanwades Stud Pokalløb (L) was run for the 125th time on Derby Day, and the anniversary race with a prize fund of DKK 400,000 produced a winner of international class: Stall Zuccini’s Mount Kilimanjaro (Siyouni) won decisively by five lengths as the strong favourite – the third shared win of the day for trainer Niels Petersen and jockey Carlos Lopez.
The four-year-old French-bred faced some of Europe’s elite last autumn, in races including the Irish Champion Stakes and the Champion Stakes. He arrived at Klampenborg on the back of recent wins in the Danish Jockey Club Cup and Stockholms Stora Pris, plus a third over 2,400 metres in the Oslo Cup (L).
The home track’s Silver Legend (Dark Angel) delivered another creditable black-type performance in second for Bettina Andersen and Jules Mobian, while Jan-Erik Neuroth’s Icon Bling (Lope De Vega) finished strongly in third under Oliver Wilson.
The first prize of DKK 220,000 went to owner Wibecke Nagell-Erichsen’s Mount Kilimanjaro, who is next expected to be seen in the Marit Sveaas Minneløp (Gr.3) at home at Øvrevoll.
