Ladies’ Day at Klampenborg: a 100th start, a millionaire – and plenty more to look out for

82 horses, nine races and DKK 953,000 in prize money. GalopSport has been through the entire racecard for Saturday’s Ladies’ Day at Klampenborg and counted every trainer, rider, owner, breeder, sire and broodmare. Here are the numbers behind the BOLOU Fine Jewellery Dansk Oaks and the Herman Sallings Mindeløb Dansk Kriterium.

One trainer in all nine races

Lea Olsen saddles 15 of the 82 horses declared for Saturday’s card. That is almost one in five in the programme — and she is the only trainer represented in all nine races. Four of her horses run in the Dansk Kriterium, two in the Dansk Oaks.

Rikke Rohbach Bonde follows with eight horses across seven races, while Bent Olsen, Bettina Andersen and Kajsa Lindsjö have seven each. Niels Petersen comes over from Norway with five — three of them in the Dansk Oaks. In all, 27 trainers send horses to post: 14 based in Denmark, 11 in Sweden and two in Norway. Between them, the 13 foreign trainers account for 22 of the 82 horses.

Appel Au Maitre has sired one horse in five

No single factor shapes the day like Appel Au Maitre. The French stallion is the sire of 16 of the 82 runners — 19.5 per cent of the field — and he has offspring in six of the nine races. Five of them line up in the Dansk Kriterium, three in the Dansk Oaks, among them Red Moondancer and Eden Rock. The day’s opening race, too, begins with an Appel Au Maitre daughter, the 8-year-old Miss Twenty.

Behind him come Moohaajim with six runners and Juniper Tree with five. All told, the 82 horses are by 44 different stallions — and out of 76 different mares.

Hjortebo has bred one horse in six

Stutteri Hjortebo stands as the breeder of 13 horses, 15.9 per cent of the field, spread across six races. It weighs heaviest in the Dansk Kriterium, where the stud has bred five of the 15 two-year-olds. Stutteri Stork follows in second place with three.

56 different breeders are represented. 44 horses are Danish-bred, 17 Swedish, 14 Irish, four French, two English and one German.

Three siblings on the same card

Stutteri Stork’s mare Edallora has three of her offspring running on the day: the 3-year-old Étoile Noire in the opening race, the 2-year-old Huntington in the Dansk Kriterium and the 6-year-old Sir Jeffrey in the eighth. The last two are full brothers by Hunter’s Light. Four other mares — MatchOffice, Nudetnok, Predict and Tell Mum — have two runners each.

Eight rides for Stott and Gråberg

Nicolaj Stott and Per-Anders Gråberg both have eight rides and are the only two to sit up in eight of the nine races. Carlos Lopez, Jacob Johansen and the apprentice Mikkel Mortensen have seven each.

The seventh race, the Taittinger Skandinavisk Ladies Cup, stands entirely on its own: ten different female amateur riders.

Ladies’ Day — in the field as well

42 of the 82 horses are fillies and mares, 33 are geldings and seven are colts and entire horses. The mares have the Dansk Oaks to themselves, but they are also in the majority in the Dansk Kriterium with nine of the 15.

An anniversary, a veteran and a millionaire

Philiango makes the 100th start of his career in the Ladies Cup. The 11-year-old Swedish-bred gelding has 17 wins and DKK 518,696 to his name. In the opening race, Miss Twenty reaches start number 101 after 100 starts and 11 wins.

The richest horse on the card is the 12-year-old Sandtastic in the Klampenborg Racing Bowl, with DKK 2,082,422 earned. Between them, the 82 horses carry 1,230 career starts and DKK 18.4 million behind them.

Half the Oaks field is trained outside Denmark

Seven of the 14 fillies in the BOLOU Fine Jewellery Dansk Oaks are trained in Sweden or Norway — four with Niels Petersen and Jan-Erik Neuroth in Norway, three in Sweden. Only six of the 14 are Danish-bred. The Dansk Kriterium, by contrast, is an almost purely Danish affair on the breeding side: 13 of the 15 two-year-olds are Danish-bred, the last two Swedish.
