Elkær Stutteri’s two-year-old Romanov became the season’s first winner among the youngest generation at Øvrevoll on Thursday evening. The Starspangledbanner son left his three rivals behind with the greatest of ease over the second half of the 900 metres and won in commanding style by five lengths for Carlos Lopez.
Romanov is among the entries for the Goffs Futurity Stakes on Klampenborg’s Derby Day on 1 August, and after Thursday’s romp it is highly likely that the bay gelding will be part of the team Niels Petersen sends towards Denmark on 31 July.
Elkær Stutteri secured Romanov through agent Edgar Byrne at last year’s Goffs Orby Sale at Kildare Paddocks, and the horse is now the third winner out of the Shamardal daughter My Call, herself a dual winner.
His grandam Hush Money (Westminster) won both the Derby (Gr.1) and the Oaks (Gr.1) in Chile, and has since become the foundation mare of several Group-race winners in Argentina.
