One of the big races on Sweden’s Derby Day went to Bro Park – more precisely to Roy Arne Kvisla, who saddled U S Goldtown to victory in the Malmö Stads Pris worth SEK 400,000. The son of Speightstown won by three-quarters of a length from Niels Petersen’s Norwegian Criterium winner Our Bear.
It was the second year in a row that Roy Arne Kvisla, Stall Poulard HB and Per-Anders Gråberg secured the Malmö Stads Pris, formerly known as the Sofierolöpning. Last year the trio won with Kodiaction (Kodiac).
U S Goldtown ran three times without winning as a two-year-old, but opened 2026 with an impressive 15-length win over 1,400 metres on dirt at home at Bro Park. Most recently he finished second behind Papa Joe (Kodi Bear) in the Voterlöpning.
Kvisla chose to stay at the 1,730-metre trip rather than aim for the Derby – a decision that proved well judged.
Bro Park thus claimed a single victory on Derby Day, while the best result for the Klampenborg trainers was Bettina Andersen’s second place in the Svenskt Derby with Michael Stounberg’s Red Cactus son Missing.
Beyond that, it was Øvrevoll or Jägersro on most of the scoresheet – led, of course, by Niels Petersen’s three big-race victories with Lord Mountbatten (Connect) in the Valley Chapel Memorial (L), Doc Holliday (Appel Au Maitre) in the Svenskt Derby and Easywithme (El Kabeir) in the Margareta Wettermarks Minneslöpning.
In the Luca Brasi Cup, Jan-Erik Neuroth and Stall Perlen’s Swedish St. Leger winner Zakopane (Zarak) galloped past his rivals in the straight, winning the SEK 125,000 contest by four lengths from Moon String (El Kabeir) and If He Says So (Summer Front).
