Lennart J:r Reuterskiöld also left his mark on Sweden’s Derby Day with two wins within the Derby series itself. In the Derby Day Sprint over 1,200 metres, the first prize of SEK 250,000 went to JWC Bloodstock’s Bushwacker, and in the Svenskt Derby Consolation the Danish-bred Icefall made every yard of the running.
Bushwacker (Supremacy) won the Derby Day Sprint easily from the Stine Schäfing-trained Twilight Hero (Twilight Son), who in turn was almost three lengths ahead of the Fredrik Reuterskiöld-trained Willoch (War Of Will).
It was a fourth win from five starts this year for Bushwacker, who spent his two-year-old season with Karl Burke in England, two second places his best results.
With the colt entered for Sweden’s Derby series, JWC Bloodstock chose to send him into training at Jägersro, and that gamble has paid off handsomely.
With Sunday’s triumph in the Derby Day Sprint, Bushwacker passed SEK 400,000 in earnings for the year, and right now he looks the best three-year-old dirt sprinter in Scandinavia.
Before Bushwacker’s procession in the Derby Day Sprint, Lennart J:r Reuterskiöld had won with another Danish-owned horse: Airborne Racing’s Icefall (Juniper Tree), who took the Svenskt Derby Consolation in commanding style by six lengths.
Maikel Narvaez Bravo sent Icefall straight to the front, and although his rivals pressed hard along the way, none was able to threaten the strong son of Juniper Tree, who won in a time that would have been fast enough for fourth in the Svenskt Derby itself.
Icefall has improved steadily through his three-year-old season, which began with a second in the Svenskt Derby Trial, five lengths behind Doc Holliday (Appel Au Maitre).
Most recently he won the Derby Next Stop over 2,200 metres from Charlie Nosto (Mutajally), and this time he was better still.
Icefall remains entered in the Bucherer Danish Derby at Klampenborg on August 1. He is owned by Carsten Nørgaard’s Airborne Racing and was raised at York Stutteri as a son of the former Scandinavian champion mare Icecapada (Mastercraftsman).
The win was worth SEK 125,000.
